What Can I Do if Someone Puts a Mechanics' Lien on My House?

When trying to sell your house, you or the buyer will inevitably do a title search on the house. What many people do not expect is an unknown lien on the property. This can be extremely annoying considering the sale of the property is probably coming soon.

Bonuses, Vacation Pay are Still Consider Wages Under Colorado Law

There are many ways an employer can pay an employee in the employer-employee context. Many employees enjoy the benefit of bonuses, compensation, and vacation pay as compensation. It is important to note that while a bonus might not be deemed a traditional wage, under the Colorado Wage Act they are considered "wages" or "compensation".  That means that if you haven't been paid your bonus, you can go after your employer under the law for that unpaid bonus.

Possible Changes to PUC Law Could Lead to More Transportation Options

House Bill 1316 has been put on Governor Hickenlooper's desk. This bill would streamline the process of becoming a transportation company.  Under the current law, any prospective taxi company in the Denver metro area has to prove that there is a "public need" prior to getting authorization by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to operate as public carrier.  But if the Governor signs this bill into law, then that public need requirement will be eliminated.  This is great news for potential competitors to Metro Taxi, Yellow Cab, Uber and other transportation providers in the Denver area.  This would make it much easier for potential competitor taxi companies to operate because traditionally it has been hard to establish public need.

Family Law: Do I Need a Child and Family Investigator?

Child and Family Investigators are tools used by the Court and parties to help determine parental right and responsibilities in family law cases. Commonly referred to as a CFI, they are usually used in extreme cases where there are allegations of abuse and mistreatment by one or more parents. The court can appoint a CFI on its own if there are allegations of abuse by one party or either party may ask for a CFI if they believe one is necessary. CFI's are commonly attorneys, mental health professionals, or any other individual who is trained and the Court believes is able to be an effective CFI.

Maintenance Requests in Colorado

Maintenance is Colorado is a hotly debated issue. It seems like the statute is always changing, making it more difficult for spouses to get maintenance (more commonly referred to as alimony). It's true that the current maintenance statute makes Colorado one of the hardest states to get a maintenance order. But before some spouses even begin their argument for why they deserve maintenance they forget to do one simple thing. Most spouses do not even get a chance to make a request for maintenance during a dissolution because they forget request maintenance in the petition for dissolution! While it may seem very simple it is seen more often than not in Domestic Relation courts.
